Swine Flu Style

There's a fashion angle on the swine flu story: Surgical masks! I could have predicted a post or two about fashionable face coverings, but I didn't anticipate that I'd see four this afternoon. The round-up:

1.) The creepy: New York blog Guest of a Guest discovered masks decorated to look like other animal's mouths, by a company called Samiraboon. Looking too hard at the monkey makes us uncomfortable.

2.) The stylish: Refinery29 dug up a high-meets-low assemblage that runs from Hussein Chalayan''s beekeeper veil to American Apparel's mustache mask.

3.) The boldfaced names: NYT blog The Moment produced a whole slideshow of masks at Fashion Week. Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela, Junya Watanabe — obviously they all knew about swine flu months in advance.

4.) The adorable: Designer Irina Blok's line surgical mask includes one with a zipper, one in a dashing leopard print, and one, my favorite, that just says "OINK" in big pink letters.

United Colors of Benetton Condoms

Benetton is well known for their racially diverse advertising and the (amazing) print mag COLORS. Manufactured in Japan by Okamoto Industries, which also makes Beyond Seven condoms and automotive interior materials I wonder if the rubbers are racially specific (sensitive) as well. I mean they'll be in a variety of colors, what about sizes? There are already condoms on the market from from Alexander Wang, Yigal Azrouël and Marc Jacobs.

Nike Launching Family Guy Inspired Sneaker

Old school Michael J Fox movies and now this? Nike is preparing for the launch of its' latest limited edition kicks. The Nike Quagmire inspired by the patter of the shirt worn by the popular, lecherous character. I'd act surprised if I was at all. Getting a sneaker isn't quite on par with accepting a Nobel honor so who am I to judge? What could be more styling than a pair of these, a trucker cap and your ironic porn stache?

First Looks: Gareth Pugh Homme

While most fashion houses were cutting their menswear lines this season due to financial difficulties Gareth Pugh was set to debut his line in Paris. Like his womenswear channels these are dark, heavily constructed and nightlife inspired garments. Not for everyone. He has made the rounds dressing Sasha Fierce (yes, thats Miss Beyonce), Lady Gaga, and Moi.. tomorrow I will wear one of his coats to a business meeting.

Jean Paul Lespagnard

Everyone has been excited about Jean Paul Lespagnard since he swept up three awards at the Festival d' Hyeres, an annual showcase of photography and design. His Ronald McDonald Disco Dollie and Rocky Meets Rocky Mountain Couture has been embraced by the European fashion media and avante performers like Yelle. I would seriously love to pick his brain. Barbie Werks The Runway

Although many designers won't appear on the Fall/Winter 09 runways in the coming weeks there's one girl you won't be able to miss. Fifty-year old style icon, Barbie will be appearing on the catwalk in both Paris and Bryant Park. Jeremy Scott cited the doll as a major inspiration for his upcoming collection. He'll also be participating in a showcase of designers whose work is entirely influenced by the plasticine fashion plate at the Mattel sponsored tents of Bryant Park. Christian Louboutin is also set to debut a pair of pumps in Barbie's iconic Pantone #219 Pink.

Sales Soar For Shoe Hurled At Bush

Last month when a Middle Eastern journalist lobbed a pair of shoes at President Bush many of us sympathized with his frustrations. How many times have I fantasized throwing something at Dubya's big stupid head? (I'd start with a stack of subpoenas) The collective understanding of the global community could explain the surge in sales of “Model 271”. The footwear may have missed Bush but since the attack they've become a hit with consumers. In an interview the manufacturer stated:

“We’ve been selling these shoes for years but, thanks to Bush, orders are flying in like crazy"

With orders pouring in from around the globe, The Baydan Shoe Company has prepared an advertising campaign with the tagline: “Goodbye Bush, Welcome Democracy". It's unfortunate that the trend has to involve such truly unfortunate looking footwear. Can you imagine what kind of damage one of these could have caused?
